COMPANIES CHARGING FOR A FREE SERVICE Recently, homeowners have been receiving solicitations in El Dorado County and across the state from private companies, such as Property Tax Assessors Records Corp, which charge a fee to complete an exemption claim form to be filed with the Assessor’s Office. El Dorado County alerts the public to the fact that there is no charge for filing a homeowner’s exemption form. The Assessor's Office does not charge for filing the Homeowner's Exemption claim forms, and is there no charge for the form itself. These private companies are not affiliated with the El Dorado County in any way. Any property owner, may file a claim directly with the Assessor at no charge without using the service offered by these businesses. More importantly, El Dorado County cautions against giving out your social security number and signature to unknown parties. The Assessor's Office suggests that owners who have been solicited examine their annual property tax bill first. If the exemption 1 line shows any amount other than zero, the bill reflects the exemption and no further action is necessary. It should be noted that buyers of residential properties are automatically sent claim forms by the Assessor’s Office, and the office conducts periodic mass reminder mailings. Homeowners who find they do not have the Exemption may call (530) 621-5719, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or (530) 621-5718 after hours to request a claim form. The full Homeowner's Exemption reduces the assessed value of an owner-occupied residence up to a maximum of $7000, resulting in a little more than $70 in savings in property tax per year. It is available to the owner of any type of property that they both own and occupy as their principal place of residence. The exemption applies to qualified properties owned and occupied on January 1st or within 90 days after the date of property acquisition, or completion of new construction. Owner occupants are entitled to only one Homeowner's Exemption within the State of California. If you have any questions, please contact Tim Holcomb, Assessor, at (530) 621-5719. |
