SOLID WASTE & HAZARDOUS MATERIALS

Union Mine Landfill & Liquid Waste Treatment Facility

Union Mine Landfill

Union Mine Treatment Plant

The Union Mine Landfill has been operated by El Dorado County since 1962. The facility ceased operating as a public disposal facility in 1996. Please note: The landfill continues to be closed to the public.

Disposal Site:

The original portion of the landfill has undergone final closure. The remaining active area receives only sludge cake from the onsite wastewater treatment plant. The wastewater treatment plant currently processes septic tank waste (septage) and liquid waste from the landfill (leachate). The landfill has three leachate collection systems and the landfill gas collection system. The landfill gas is incinerated in a flare located at the wastewater plant. Treated septage and leachate are injected into the flare for thermal destruction. As described in the renewable energy section below, the County is considering using some of the landfill gas to supply electricity for the wastewater plant.

Nearby Gun Range:

A public shooting range is located adjacent to the landfill. In 2001, the shooting range's current operations were assessed for the environmental impact of lead, copper, nickel, and zinc - four metals associated with bullets and shell casings.
