Foster Care Homes Sought for Kittens

 El Dorado County Animal Services is looking for individuals who would like to provide foster care in their homes for abandoned and adoptable animals. “We especially need foster care homes for kittens,” said Tonya Ruffner, Shelter Supervisor for Animal Services. “Kitten season is right around the corner. We are already seeing an increase in mother cats and babies coming in to our shelter.”
 Animal foster families serve as volunteers who offer temporary, loving care in their homes while a permanent home is being sought for the animals. The commitment to care for the animals usually lasts for two to three weeks. Animal Services provides all of the supplies needed for the animals during the foster care stay, and staff are available for consultation.
According to Ruffner, newborn kittens can require some extra care and time. “We usually ask the foster family to take both the mother cat and all of her babies. For very young kittens, the commitment can last up to four to six weeks. Occasionally kittens are brought to the shelter without a mother,” said Ruffner. “Caring for the kittens in our foster care program is definitely a lot of work, but our volunteers say it is a very rewarding experience.
